About New Urbanism
Planning that promotes sustainable, livable, and healthy communities. See what makes The Village so special. There are important details that distinguish The Village, a New Urban or Traditional Neighbourhood Development (TND), from a conventional suburban development.

-
Recognize that the built environment effects our behaviour and attitudes.
-
Take care in creating public spaces of a new neighbourhood when creating the private spaces of homes.
-
Are limited in size so that residents are within a 5-minute walk of its centre, where the needs of daily life are met.
-
Provide an excellent location for workplaces, community events, and retail.
-
Reduce dependence on the car and allows everyone independence of movement.
-
Have streets designed in such a way as to calm traffic and ensure the safety and enjoyment of pedestrians.

Starting in 1995 plans were developed for a showcase community to welcome residents and visitors to Historic Niagara-on-the-Lake. New Urban architect and town planner Andrés Duany came to Niagara to master plan this new development. Duany’s team studied Old Town, measuring street widths, heights of buildings and density in order to create an inventory of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s architecture. The Village is truly inspired by a love of old Niagara-on-the-Lake. Construction started in 1998 and we have been growing ever since. Learn about the development history of our community.
